I got hold hold of a Tu-Ka phone (which uses ez-web service(WAP)) from Loax
in Akihabara (there is usually someone there who's english is reasonable)
while I only had a tourist visa. The only reason I got Tu-Ka was because
iMode wasn't providing English support then. The phone itself cost 10 yen
and the only condition was that payment of the bill was via direct debit
from a credit card.
Good luck.

Subject: (keitai-l) Mundane question
Fellow list members:
A very mundane question and request for help. I come to Japan every month,
but don't read Japanese at all, speak very poorly.
Can anyone explain to me **precisely** if/how (e.g., name of store, model
#, etc) I can walk into a store, buy an I-Mode phone, pay with a
non-Japanese credit card (Visa, etc.), and get the I-Mode service in English
while I am in Japan?
THANK YOU
Dan Isenberg
