A really, really curious thing about imode/j-phone and similar is that it
is the first communications technology that has not relied on
smut-merchants serving early adopters on expensive equipment to make it
popular.... Most new-tech is driven by sex or war, this is the first ever
to be driven by jingles...

(That said, back in the early days of PHS, DDI (I think) - a major player
in PHS had a saturation advertisment campaign, with lots of glossy
brochures and ads to promote their service. All the female characters were
lambs - many dressed in sailor suit school-uniform and with o-so loose
socks. All the male characters were wolves - businessmen wolves, young-men
wolves and lots of old-men wolves. All the wolves - slathered slightly....
Most were in PHS conversation with saucy, but coy, lambs. Some lambs
talked to each other - few wolves bothered with each other. The target of
the ads were the lambs - young women....

I am not sure exactly what DDI thought the subtextual message of the ads
was - this was at a time when "assisted dating" (Enjou kosai) was much
breastbeaten over in the local press - but most of my Japanese friends
were shocked when I made the obvious associations a westerner would make,
and I was roundly accused of being an English pervert.... The ad campaign
ran for about a year.)
