browscap.ini is not a problem if you have your own server (or an
administrator who is willing to let you add edit this file) and keep up with
new browser releases. I used to use browscap.ini with ASP as well until I
found BrowserHawk.

Sadly it only seems to available to win xx platforms, unless
youre planning to use the BrowserHawk javabean.
With PHP you can use cyScapes's browscap ini file with
function get_browser(). More info at:

Using this function alone isn't of course as powerfull
solution as the BrowserHawk itself. Atleast its free.
