While I do not have data, I can relate personal experience. It took a while
to learn how to use them effectively --- the first person I tried to use it
with and I were subject to a rather unfortunate feedback squeal.... However,
once I got it set right, I did use it occasionally, and found it very
helpful when I wanted my hands free. Usually, I used it when I received a
call while I was listening to the radio. It did look strange to others
seeing me walk down the street talking to myself (mitte! henna gaijin da
yo... ;-)
Certainly, though, I rarely saw others using the earphone mics....
One thing to consider, it may not be allowed to use headphones while driving
(that is the case in the US) as you cannot hear emergency vehicles....
