Chatting is HUGELY popular on phones. Some of the most common websites are
basically real-time "chat" bulletin boards.
And email/messaging is the most popular use for cellphones.
Entering Japanese text is no more or less difficult on a phone than it is on a
computer. In fact, most mobile phone users have never used a PC keyboard, and
therefore have no problems inputting on a 10-key pad.
