Most interesting!! Thanks for this insight.

I certainly understand the security/privacy concerns, but would like a way
to recognize a user of a site automatically. Perhaps with the implementation
of java something can be saved on the phone itself as an identifier.

Absolutely not. That was how it was with WAP in Japan for a time, and it
caused
pretty serious privacy concerns.
It's basically illegal for the operator to give out such customer info as
the
phone number, email id, etc.

No client side cookies or scripting with i-mode. You must track the user
server
side, or with params in the url or something.
