It depends on how you define "staggering success" though.
While Japanese mobile emails outstrip SMS in traffic volumes - it seems
that the mobile operators make a heck of a lot more cash out of SMS as
it is charged at a much higher price point.
Hence, from an operators perspective - SMS is a staggering success and
Japans mobile email is fairly minor in comparison.
